In a show of support for dynamic leadership in higher education, Adams Otakwu, the Chairperson of the Conference of Civil Societies and Coordinator of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMICO), has voiced strong backing for Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja.
Speaking today on the sideline of a roundtable event in Abuja to mark the 2024 International Day of Poverty Eradication, Otakwu emphasized that poverty eradication hinges on quality education, which can only be delivered by reputable institutions led by visionary leaders.
He argued that Maikudi, due to her accomplishments and youthful energy, is well-suited for this role at an institution strategically located in the Federal Capital Territory.
Despite the enthusiastic endorsement, Maikudi’s candidacy has faced unfounded opposition, some of which seems to stem from her youth, gender, and exceptional qualifications.
Otakwu countered that her attributes should be viewed as strengths rather than weaknesses, noting that age should not be an obstacle in a world bustling with young leaders who have made significant impacts in their respective countries.
He referenced historical precedents within Nigeria’s higher education system where younger academics took on leadership positions, underscoring a need to foster an environment that values competence over arbitrary age limits.
Additionally, Otakwu dismantled the myths circulating about Maikudi’s qualifications, highlighting that the current academic laws do not stipulate the ten-year professorial experience falsely claimed by detractors.
He stated that many predecessors had assumed vice chancellor roles with considerably less experience. Prof. Maikudi’s distinguished career—including her tenure as Head of Department and Deputy Vice Chancellor—positions her as a capable candidate poised to lead the University of Abuja into a new era of excellence.
“The real fear of her opposition is her impressive track record,” Otakwu remarked, urging the university council to uphold the integrity of the selection process, ultimately reaffirming their confidence in Maikudi’s ability to propel the institution forward.
