Olukayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has inaugurated the Special Intervention Squad in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with the aim of tackling the activities of kidnapping, kidnappers, and bandits, especially in border towns within the territory.
The newly established special squad is tasked with patrolling and securing communities along the borders of Abuja. It will be responsible for intervening to control and mitigate violent attacks within the nation’s capital.
The IGP announced the establishment of the squad as a primary project of his administration following his assumption of office in June.
Egbetokun maintained that the SIS would consist of specially trained officers ready to intervene swiftly in significant security incidents, aligning with his administration’s priority to combat the country’s threat of violent crime.
The Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, introduced the new commander of the IRT, DC Mohammed Sanusi on his X page.
The team, under his leadership, has made significant arrests of kidnappers and successfully recovered arms and ammunition, some of which were recently showcased.
“Just 2 days after the launching of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in Abuja, by the IGP, IRT has picked 2 gun runners and 4 suspected kidnappers who terrorise the FCT and neighbouring communities.
