The Global News reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended the nationwide protest.
The suspension followed a review by the labour body of Day One of the protests, which was originally intended to conclude today.
The NLC announced the decision in a communique issued after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which assessed the progress of the protests.
The Labour union acknowledged that the protest achieved an overwhelming success and accomplished the key objectives of the two-day protest on the first day.
The communique, signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and Acting General Secretary Ismail Bello, instructed that simultaneous press conferences be held across all states of the federation by the state councils of the Congress, in addition to the national headquarters.
The communique stated the extension of the seven-day ultimatum given to the federal government by an additional seven days, now expiring on March 13th.
During this extended ultimatum, the Labour body expects the government to fulfill all agreements made on October 2nd, 2023, as well as address the demands outlined in its letter during Tuesday’s nationwide protest.
The NLC emphasized that it would convene to determine further courses of action should the government fail to meet the demands within the 14-day period specified in the ultimatum.
It praised Nigerian workers for sending a strong message to the government on their united resolve to demand accountability from those who occupy positions of leadership, adding that “the message has strongly resonated.”
The NLC NEC expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their widespread participation in the peaceful protest against hardship, demonstrating their dissatisfaction with government policies and its association with the IMF and the World Bank.
