The Global News reports that crude oil explosion in a community in Rivers State has reportedly resulted in over 20 fatalities.

The incident occurred over the weekend at a waterside in Omoku, the headquarters of the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, a prominent oil and gas hub in the South-South state.

Individuals with varying degrees of burns are undergoing treatment at different local hospitals.

The cause of the explosion and an accurate count of casualties remain unknown at the time of this report.

Conflicting accounts suggest it might have resulted from the distribution of stolen crude in containers or tapping crude from an underground pipe.
