The Nigerian Civil Society has commended the Federal High Court’s decision to dismiss a suit seeking the removal of Ola Olukoyede as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a press release issued by Adams Otakwu, Chairperson of the Conference of Civil Societies and Coordinator of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMICO) on June 20, 2024, CIMICO hailed the judgment as a testament to the credibility of the current war on corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria. The organization also noted that the judgment has put to shame those opposed to the war on corruption and financial crimes in the country.
The suit, filed by an Abuja-based legal practitioner, Victor Opatola, had challenged Olukoyede’s appointment as EFCC Chairman, citing lack of qualification and locus standi. However, Justice Obiora Egwuatu dismissed the suit, affirming Olukoyede’s eligibility for the position. CIMICO praised the court’s decision, stating that it reinforces the commitment of Nigeria as a country to fighting corruption and ensuring accountability in governance.
CIMICO’s statement reads, “We commend the Federal High Court’s judgment, which upholds the integrity of the EFCC and its leadership.
